Nine

I wiped the sweat from my forehead and tried to ignore the deep-seated exhaustion settling within me. The sky was still pitch-black, but I could tell dawn wasn't far off.

"Do you think we've lost them?" I asked, hoping he was going to say yes, but knowing that wasn't going to be the case.

"Probably not," Haurun responded. "And that's going to be a problem."

"How many have we killed?"

"Four."

"And they keep coming." I let out a small groan. "I'm not dressed for trekking across the desert once the sun comes up."

"In fairness, I don't think what we're doing would count as trekking." It was a shame neither of us could drive or we'd have been able to get ourselves a car of some kind. Then again, getting into one would have been time in which the set animals would have been able to catch up with us.

"If we were human, we'd be dead."

"Grim thought," Haurun responded.

I shrugged. "Do you not think about things like that?"

"I've never had a reason to."

"Oh, I suppose that makes sense." The health of a human army was something I'd given a lot of thought and attention to over the years, which meant that I had an appreciation for the kinds of things a human could go through versus what a god could handle.

"There's an oasis up ahead," he said, pointing in that direction.

I followed his gaze and noticed the dark shapes of trees rising up from the sand. "Huh, so there is."

"Reckon we can lose the set animals amongst the trees?"

"I wouldn't count on it, especially with how difficult it was to lose them in the city, but it'll at least slow them down. Do you reckon they can climb?"

"Probably better than we can."

"Eurgh. Ma'at owes us big time for this," I muttered.

To my surprise, he chuckled rather than telling me our task was an honour or some other rubbish like that. Perhaps he realised that there was no way he could convince me of that given the circumstances.

"They'll at least be a water source there," he said. "I don't know about you, but I could use a drink."

"A drink, a bath, a roasted duck to go with it." I sighed.

"So now you can remember food." He started in the direction of the oasis, and I hurried to keep up. If the set animals gained on us then I wanted to be near him. Two of us fighting them off was preferable to one of us having to do it alone.

"I'm more scared than nervous now."

"Right, so if you're nervous, I need to feed you, but if you're scared, you'll do it yourself? Got it."

A small thrill travelled through me at his words, but I pushed it down. I was just pleased that he was starting to warm to me enough that he wasn't actively hating me anymore.

A growl sounded from behind us, and I looked over my shoulder in time to see one of the set animals ready to pounce.

"Haurun, we need to go," I said, pushing him towards the oasis at a faster pace.
